Ice age hits recruitment
A new survey of 1400 employers indicates that 3/4 are freezing their recruitment activities.
This is yet another side effect of the credit crunch with employers holding off any further recruitment until a time when the present economic uncertainty is lifted. Unfortunately this in recruitment is an example of the downward spiral recession can take. Less people can find jobs, confidence lowers, spending is reduced across the economy and the loop goes on.
It's a sticky one for any government to find a way of breaking the cycle. Even the head of the Bank of England was recently quoted as saying he could not see, at this point, an obvious way out of the situation and a timescale in which things would improve.
The recruitment industry, up until now, has seemed fairly recession proof, although these latest figures surely spell bad news for recruitment agencies everywhere. Law firm Peninsula is taking 3000 calls a week on redundancy from employers. As always, even in the gloom, someone will benefit somewhere!
